Markets up on US GDP data

Wall Street was much happier on Thursday after the latest GDP figures for the United States.

The Dow Jones Index was up almost 1.5%, or 136 points, to 9898.

The Nasdaq Composite was also up 1.5%, or 30 points, to 2090.

European markets were up between 1% in London to 1.5% in Frankfurt.

The Australian 200 Index was down by 2.4%, 110 points, to 4574.

In New Zealand , the NZX 50 also closed down 7 points at 3195 on turnover of $74 million.

At 5.40am on Friday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 73.37 US cents, 80.1 Australian cents, 44.22 pence, 66.98 yen and 0.4943 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 65.89.

Brent crude oil was trading at $US77.44 per barrel. Gold was trading at $US1045 per ounce.
