The National Bank's latest Regional Trends survey indicates a bounce in consumer and business confidence has underpinned economic activity.

Activity jumped 0.7% in the three months to September, the second consecutive quarterly increase.

Twelve of the 14 regions surveyed experienced a rise, led by Waikato - in its first increase in activity since the end of 2007 - while Bay of Plenty and Wellington contracted.

On an annual basis the survey indicated the economy contracted 1.8%.
