New Zealand Oil & Gas says it's exploration well, Albacore One, off the Taranaki coast, has not been successful.
Drilling reached its total depth of more than 2km on Sunday morning, but only traces of hydrocarbons were found.
This means the well is non-commercial and it will be plugged and abandoned.
The well is one of four to be drilled this summer.
