Thirteen years after opening its first street espresso store in Wellington, Fuel Espresso has opened its first overseas store in Hong Kong.

The business is now one of the largest coffee companies in New Zealand with nine stores in the capital, employing 50 people.

Founder Sanjay Ponnapa says business in Hong Kong was slow and hard to begin with.

He says Hong Kong has a different takeaway culture. Compared to New Zealand, most of the business - 60% - is done after midday.

Mr Ponnapa says the company is building its brand through reputation and is sited between two of Asia's largest financial centres amid many international brands.
