Christmas Eve shopping sets record

12:10 pm on 25 December 2009

A new record has been set for Christmas Eve shopping with 4.2 million Eftpos transactions totalling $226 million processed on Thursday.

The figure was issued by Paymark, which handles three quarters of electronic transactions in New Zealand.

Eftpos transactions are up by about 5% compared to last year, when about $216 million was spent.

Chief executive officer Simon Tong says two out of every three purchases were paid for electronically. Between midday and 1pm, Paymark was handling 131 transactions per second.
