Consumers are restraining their bank card spending, according to latest Statistics New Zealand data.

Total credit and debit card spending in December was $4.84 billion - only slightly up on the previous three months.

The biggest increase in card spending was for fuel, while card transactions for travel, health and other non-retail activity were down.

Statistics New Zealand says core retail spending in December was up by 0.4% on November.
