Inflation data 'rules out early rate rise'

7:16 am on 21 January 2010

Economists are ruling out a March increase in official interest rates, after inflation data came in weaker than expected.

The Consumers Price Index, which measures the cost of living, fell 0.2% in the three months to the end of December, putting annual inflation at 2%.

This is slightly softer than the market was expecting.

Goldman Sachs JB Were economist Philip Borkin says the Reserve Bank will not be in any rush to raise the Official Cash Rate.
