Australian trade deficit rises

6:27 am on 4 February 2010

Official figures have revealed that Australia's trade deficit has increased by $A524 million to more than $A2.52 billion in seasonally adjusted terms.

The ABC reports the deficit was slightly bigger than the market was expecting.

The figures were issued by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday.

Exports rose, driven by non-rural goods, but were outweighed by a surge in imports after an increase in intermediate goods such as fuel, iron and steel.
