New Zealand's newest mobile phone network says it has gained 206,000 customers in the past six months.

2Degrees says the figure is well ahead of its expectations, with about 53,000 of its customers moving from Telecom of Vodafone.

2Degrees says about 80% of people changing companies came from Vodafone, but says it received a surge of hundreds of new connections at the end of January when Telecom's XT network failed affecting tens of thousands of users.

The company says it will launch third-generation mobile services that include high-speed data later this year.
