Mail decline continues at NZ Post

4:14 pm on 26 February 2010

Falling postal volumes have again cut profits at New Zealand Post.

Domestic mail and parcels were down by 5.7% , or 27 million items, on the corresponding previous period.

Overall, NZ Post made a profit of $42.5 million in the six months to the end of December, down by 19.4% on the $52.8 million in the same period the year earlier.

Chief executive Brian Roche says revenue fell by about $35 million to $622 million.

Mr Roche says there are encouraging signs of an economic recovery, but the company does not expect to feel the benefits in the second half of the year.

NZ Post will pay the Government a dividend of $5.7 million, down on the $6.9 million dividend paid in the same period a year earlier.
