Call for developed nations to free up agricultural trade

[b Brazilian trade lobbyist Mario Marconini says emerging countries will not settle for half measures to help advance stalled world trade talks.

Brazil, along with China, India and Russia, has emerged as an important global player. Its economy is the eighth largest in the world, with gross domestic product exceeding $US1.6 trillion in 2008.

Mr Marconini, a former Brazilian trade official and now director of international negotiations at the Federation of Industries of the State of Sao Paulo, says developed nations need to free up agricultural trade.

He believes more New Zealand firms should think about tapping the growing Brazilian economy, especially in the farming sector.

Mr Marconini says Brazil's focus on improving its roading network and high-value, niche products such as security technology and radio technology should also attract firms thinking of expanding their presence in the South American nation.
