Kenya flower exports hit by ash cloud

Kenya's flower industry is badly hit by the cancellation of flights across Europe because of the ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland.

The Kenya Flower Council said the disruption is costing growers between $US1.5 - $US2 million per day.

Chief executive Jane Ngige said about 500 tonnes of flowers are being held in cool storage at Nairobi airport.

Flowers are the country's biggest export earner, accounting for about 20% of all exports.

Growers are still harvesting flowers. The BBC reports flower trucks arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Friday morning were being turned away.

According to the Kenya Flower Council, 97% of all Kenya's flower exports are sent to the European Union.

An estimated 100,000 people are employed by the country's 300 growers. About 1.2 million people derive their livelihood from the flower export industry.
