Company plugs West Coast oil bore

Widespread Energy has abandoned the drilling of an oil exploration bore at its Kotuku permit near Lake Brunner on the South Island's West Coast.

The company says several attempts to reach the 250 metre target failed because of engineering difficulties, so the bore has been plugged.

However it says there was evidence of oil between 21 and 90 metres deep.

Widespread Energy says it will analyse the data gathered so far, before planning the next stages of the exploration programme.
