High-speed internet access programme now half-way

High-speed broadband internet access is now available to more than one million people in New Zealand.

Telecom said on Monday its Chorus unit has reached half-way in a programme to upgrade broadband in areas with 500 lines or more by the end of next year.

Earlier this month, Telecom signalled it may consider making Chorus a separate company.

The Government has threatened to shut Telecom out of a $1.5 billion plan to roll out ultrafast broadband to three-quarters of households unless it separates its retail and network businesses.
