Consumer confidence in Australia has fallen sharply, with concerns about budget and tax issues dominating.

The Westpac - Melbourne Institute index fell 5.7% in June, after sliding 7% in May.

Westpac senior economist Matthew Hassan says the last two months were the biggest decline since the peak of the share market rout, with the index down 12.3% since April.
