Debt relief deal announced for Congo

A debt relief programme worth $US12.3 billion has been agreed for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank said it has made good efforts to reform its economy and governance in recent years.

DR Congo currently pays around $US300 million every year in debt repayments.

It is marking the 50th anniversary of its independence.
