Govt to launch awareness campaign on illegal timber

5:34 pm on 11 July 2010

A move in Europe to stop the importation and sale of illegally logged timber has prompted an awareness campaign by the New Zealand Government.

All 27 countries in the European Union have agreed to draft legislation by 2012 on policies for the banning of illegal importation and sale.

The EU hopes this will help fight climate change and deforestation in forests from the Amazon to Asia.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry says the problem will be raised as part of an campaign, along with plans to promote information on how to source timber legally.

The campaign is expected to be launched later this month.
