The Australian government has announced plans to increase the level of support to workers who lose their job.

Labor says it will expand the Government guarantee on redundancy payments to cover up to four weeks for every year of service.

The ABC reports the existing scheme is limited to 16 weeks.

The Government has also announced plans to force employers to make it clear exactly how much superannuation an employee is paid.

The announcement comes as Australians prepare to go to the polls in the 21 August federal elections.
