New Zealand sharemarket closes slightly down

The New Zealand sharemarket closed down on Tuesday, with the benchmark NZX50 falling 12 points, or 0.4%, to close at 3008 on turnover of $39 million.

Fletcher Building finished up 10 cents to $7.73, Telecom was up 1 cent to $1.97, Contact Energy was up 3 cents to $5.69.

Sky City Entertainment finished up 3 cents to $2.99 and Sky Network Television was up 8 cents at $4.75.

The Warehouse was up 4 cents to $3.60.

Rakon was up 3 cents to $1.01, while Michael Hill Jewelery was unchanged at 70 cents after cutting the value of its 2008 intellectual property sale.

Infratil was up 1 cent to $1.63. The company's manager is bidding for Australia's Port of Brisbane.

NZ Refinery was down 14 cents to $3.08.

Farming Systems Uruguay was unchanged at 55 cents, and PGG Wrightson was up 1 cent to 52 cents.

Allied Farmers was up 0.4 cents to 6.5 cents.

The NZ dollar was at 72.45 US, 81.40 Australian, 47.35 pence, 63.85 yen, 0.5648 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was 68.044.

Across the Tasman, the Australian 200 index was up 6 points, or 0.1%, to 4492.
