Port wharves structurally safe

Updated at 6:28 am on 5 September 2010

An initial damage assessment of the Port of Lyttelton showed the wharves are structurally safe.

PoL chief executive Peter Davie says places where the wharves are attached to the land have weakened and retaining walls are broken.

The port resumed operations after power was restored on Saturday.

Mr Davie says shipping will continue as usual, although cargo operations might be slow.
