Govt accused of waste on finance company

The Finance Minister has refused to disclose details of bids made for failed South Canterbury Finance in the face of Labour Party accusations the Government has wasted taxpayers' money on the bailout.

Bill English says he is not going to undermine efforts to sell South Canterbury's assets by talking publicly about bids.

During Question Time in Parliament Labour's finance spokesperson David Cunliffe accused the Government of wasting about half a billion dollars by not accepting a $1.3 billion bid for South Canterbury Finance, made at the end of August.

But Mr English suggested Mr Cunliffe was simply being used by aggrieved bidders.

Mr English says the Government is still intent on minimising the cost to taxpayers, who are paying out $1.6b to the company's depositors under the retail deposit guarantee scheme.
