Wall Street has declined, led by bank shares, which have fallen over concerns about faulty handling of home loans and foreclosures.
The Dow Jones Index was down 26 points on Thursday to 11,070. The Nasdaq Composite was down seven points to 2431.
In Europe: the FTSE 100 in London was down 0.3%, CAC-40 in Paris was down 0.2% and the DAX in Frankfurt was up 0.3%.
The Nikkei index in Tokyo was up 180 points to 9584.
The Australian 200 index was up 79 points to 4699.
The NZX50 was up 31 points to 3263 on turnover of $91 million.
In currency markets, the NZ dollar was trading at 75.67 US cents, 76.25 Australian cents, 47.27 pence, 61.57 yen and 0.5376 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 66.80.
Brent crude oil was trading at $US84.16 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1377.50 per ounce.
