Sony to stop selling Walkman cassette player in Japan

Sony has confirmed it will stop selling its portable music player, the cassette tape Walkman, in Japan.

The electronics company has already stopped production there, and the current stock held in stores will be the last.

The BBC reports the Walkman changed lifestyles in 1979 by popularising music on the go, paving the way for today's MP3 players and iPods.

Sony says it will continue for now to produce and sell the cassette Walkman overseas.
