Jobs boost for US economy

9:49 am on 6 November 2010

The United States economy created 151,000 extra jobs in October - the first gain since May - though the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.6%.

The new jobs figure is much higher than analysts had expected, given the sluggish recovery of the economy, the BBC reports.

However, the unemployment rate has now been at the current level for three months

Private sector jobs increased by 159,000, while the government cut only 8,000 jobs.

President Barack Obama says the job numbers are promising but warned there was still work to be done, and that would require more cooperation between Republicans and his Democrat party.
