Small lift in number of firms planning to hire

The number of employers planning to hire more staff in the new year has edged up slightly.

A survey of employers' hiring intentioned by recruitment firm Manpower shows a net 24% of employers now plan to hire more staff in the first three months of the year, compared with 22% three months ago.

However, Manpower New Zealand general manager Chris Riley says despite the small lift, companies remain nervous and there's a huge divergence in intentions amongst differing sectors.

The manufacturing sector shows the greatest optimism, with 7% more employers in that sector looking to hire staff next year.

The finance, real estate and insurance sectors are the most pessimistic. Hiring intentions fell, resulting in only a net 12% of employers in those sectors intending to take on more staff in the new year.
