Blueberry business booming this year

7:45 am on 24 December 2010

Fresh blueberry exports to Australia are up significantly on last year, with volumes expected to top 900 tonnes this year.

Blueberries New Zealand chair Dan Peach says growers are sending more blueberries across the Tasman than ever before because of stronger demand from consumers there.

He says the industry usually sends about 700 tonnes to Australia.

Mr Peach says growing conditions this season have been good for producing sweet, plump blueberries, and the harvest could be more than 3000 tonnes.

About 550 hectares of the fruit are planted around the country, mostly in the upper North lsand.

Meanwhile, top cyclist and former Olympic rower Sonia Waddell has been named a new ambassador for Blueberries New Zealand.
