Trade shows promote university research to businesses

The country's universities have been showcasing their products and research to the private sector, drawing strong interest.

Business New Zealand and the University Commercialisation Offices of New Zealand arranged a number of events to stimulate collaboration and hopefully boost exports.

The latest was held in Auckland on Wednesday night.

New Zealand has one of the lowest levels of research and development spending by business in the OECD, with much of it being done by public bodies such as universities and Crown Research Institutes.

There is some collaboration but the Government wants greater contact to design and build products that New Zealand can sell to the rest of the world.

Uniservices chief executive Peter Lee agrees more can be done.

Business New Zealand chief executive Phil O'Reilly says putting business and universities in the same room is an old but simple idea but it seems to have worked.
