Infratil has bought a power station development site from the New South Wales government for $A9 million.

Infratil Energy Australia purchased the Bamarang site, which is 160km south of Sydney.

It says the site is close to gas, water and transmission infrastructure, and already has consent for a 450 megawatt gas-fired generation.

Infratil Energy Australia has about 280 megawatt of generation in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

Its retail units, Lumo Energy and Perth Energy, have a combined customer base of about 420,000.
