Spending by means of electronic cards fell slightly in February,

Statistics New Zealand figures show retail spending using debit, credit and charge cards fell a seasonally-adjusted 0.2% in February.

A 2.4% rise in January was the biggest gain in five years.

Excluding fuel and car purchases, spending fell 0.6%, as consumers spent less on furniture, hardware, appliances and clothes.

Statistics New Zealand says the figures don't show how the latest Canterbury earthquake has affected spending, because there is no regional breakdown of data.
