The services sector has stalled, with the BNZ-Business New Zealand Performance of Services Index at 50.8 in March.
A reading above 50 indicates the sector is expanding.
BNZ economist Doug Steel says the accommodation, retail and hospitality sectors in Canterbury suffered badly following the earthquake in February.
However, North Island firms in areas like health and transport experienced healthy expansion.
