The industry body representing finance companies has launched a set of guidelines for borrowing and lending.
The Financial Services Federation has developed the resource alongside a number of stakeholders including the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the Ministry of Social Development.
The federation's executive director, Kirk Hope, says the guidelines set an important benchmark for lending practices.
Mr Hope says the guidelines set out specific steps that lenders may need to take to determine whether a customer is suitable for a loan, and should help when a dispute arises.
The guidelines are available on the Financial Services Federation's website.
