Boeing earnings lift 17%

US aerospace maker Boeing has reported its second quarter earnings rose 17% from a year ago to $US998 million, helped by improved productivity amid flat revenues.

The earnings were stronger than expected, and were in comparison to last year when Boeing took a charge for a delay on its airborne early warning defence programs.

Revenues grew a modest 1% to $US17.2 billion, with a rise in defence sales offsetting a small decline in commercial aircraft revenues.

Boeing said it would provide an updated schedule for its new 787 Dreamliner programme in the current quarter. The programme was delayed last month for a fifth time to fix a structural problem.
