Fulltime jobs shrink in Australia

7:33 pm on 9 June 2011

Australia's unemployment rate has remained steady at 4.9% but 22,000 fulltime jobs were shed in May.

The Bureau of Statistics' seasonally adjusted figures show a total of 7,800 jobs were created in the month, but all of them were part-time positions.

It is the second month in a row that fulltime employment in Australia has slipped, with April's fall being revised to 57,200 after initially being estimated at 49,100.
