Quiet day on Wall Street, but oil rising

It was a quiet day on Wall Street. US stocks rose on opening but have since dipped.

The Dow Jones Index was up 1 point, to 11,952. The Nasdaq Composite was down 4 points, or 0.1%, to 2639.

However, leading stock markets in Europe recovered slightly.

The FTSE 100 index in London rose 0.1% to 5773 points, while the DAX in Frankfurt rose 0.2% to 7085 points and the CAC-40 in Paris rose 0.07%to 3807 points.

The Australian 200 Index was closed Monday for the Queen's Birthday public holiday

The NZX 50 closed down 13 points, or 0.4%, at 3476.

At 8.15am on Tuesday, the New Zealand dollar was buying $US81.51 US cents, 77.89 Australian cents, 49.78 pence, 65.39 yen and 0.5657 euro.

The Trade Weighted Index was at 70.24.

Brent crude has risen more than $US2 per barrel to $US121.26 per barrel - a record. Gold was trading at $US1517.25 per ounce.
