The owners of the Nga Awa Purua geothermal power station have sold $9.3 million worth of carbon credits.

The 140-megawatt station is run jointly by Mighty River Power and the Tauhara North Number Two Trust.

The facility, north east of Taupo, received the credits because the geothermal energy means less fossil fuels need to burned.

It sold 410,000 emission reduction units to Deutsche Bank for $22.78 each.
