Spending using electronic cards rose slightly in July.

Statistics New Zealand figures show the value of spending using debit, credit and charge cards, rose a seasonally-adjusted 0.2% to $5.3 billion in July.

The increase was largely due to a pickup in hospitality spending, which includes accommodation, bars, cafes, restaurants and takeaways.

Fuel retailing fell 1.4% during the month, as fuel prices fell.

The figures cover about two-thirds of retail sales and do not include cash and cheque transactions.
