Asahi Group Holdings has made another purchase in New Zealand, buying Independent Liquor.

After buying listed firm, Charlie's Group, for $129 million, the Japanese brewer has now paid $US1.3 billion for Independent Liquor, whose products include Woodstock Bourbon and Vodka Cruiser.

The company, which is owned by Unitas and Pacific Equity Partners, reported a loss of $22.7 million last year.

Asahi has been buying beverage firms outside its home market of Japan, to counter sagging domestic consumption and a strong yen.
