Michael Hill International has boosted its full year profit by a third to $34.5 million in the year to the end of June as sales continue to recover from the downturn.

The jeweller's revenue rose 10% to $489 million, with its bridal diamond rings pushing up the the average sale price.

Sales at its 146 Australian stores, which generate the bulk of earnings, rose 6%, while income in its 52 New Zealand stores rose more than 6%.

But the company says the retail environment on both sides of the Tasman remains patchy, and it's had to spend more on marketing, consumer payment plans and managing stock levels.
