Dairy giant Fonterra has formed a joint venture with a British-based firm to provide premium whey proteins for Fonterra's growing food ingredients business in Europe.
The country's largest firm and exporter has teamed up with First Milk, which will process the cheese by-product at its Lake District creamery in Cumbria.
Fonterra says this joint venture is the first step in its goal of using local European sources to meet demand from European customers.
First Milk says it will benefit by building up the whey side stream of the cheese-making process, which will boost returns to its farmer members.
