Hansells Food Group is opening new $18 million premises in Auckland, including an innovation centre.

The new facility, which is to be officially opened on Friday, has been built to accommodate greater volumes and will allow the company to turn around new product lines more quickly.

To mark the opening, it is launching a new of classic tarts and cakes under its Aunt Betty's label. The new line took 10 months to develop.

Aunt Betty's is one of four strong brands in the Hansell's stable, which also includes Alpha One rice bran oil and VitaFresh.

Set up 77 years ago by L B Maunsell, who made essences in a chicken coop, Hansells is now a $160 million business employing more than 380 workers and featuring more than 600 product lines.
