Contact customer numbers steady

Contact Energy's customer numbers held steady in August.

The power firm's monthly operational figures shows it retained 438,500 electricity customers at the end of August and gained 500 gas customers.

Over the year, Contact has lost 35,500 electricity customers, due to Government-mandated changes to promote competition and many players in the electricity market cutting prices to attract users.

Total generation rose from 895 to 983 gigawatt hours in August, while total electricity purchases rose from 809 to 814 gigawatt hours.
