US job numbers better than expected

The number of jobs created in the United States in September exceeded expectations but the jobless rate remained at 9.1%.

Official figures show 103,000 new jobs were added in September.

The result was boosted by workers returning after strike action but figures for earlier months were also revised up, the BBC reports.

The private sector accounted for all the job gains.

Excluding the workers who ended strike action, the number of jobs created was still at a higher-than-predicted 58,000.

Employment growth has slowed sharply from the first quarter of the year, when jobs growth averaged more than 165,000 a month, the ABC reports.
