A subsidiary of businessman Graham Hart's packaging company has reported widening losses.

US-based Graham Packaging, which supplies rigid plastic containers for the food, specialty beverage and consumer products markets, lost $35.1 million in the three months to September.

That compares with a $2.4 million loss in the same period a year earlier.

Mr Hart's packaging empire, Reynolds Group, paid $US1.7 billion for Graham Packaging in June.
