A bluefin tuna weighing 269kg has been auctioned at the fish market in Tokyo for a record price of 56.49 million yen ($US736,000).

Bluefin tuna are prized for making the finest sushi. The auction was the first of the year at the Tsukiji fish market.

The BBC reports the total price translates to 210,000 yen ($US2,737) per kg.

The winning bidder was Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of a sushi restaurant chain. The tuna was caught off Oma, in Aomori prefecture.

The BBC reports the first auction in January at the fish market is an important part of Japan's New Year celebrations, and record prices are often set.

Last year, a 342kg bluefin tuna caught off Hokkaido fetched 32.49 million yen (almost $US400,000).
