Tourism revenues down 30% in Egypt

Revenues from Egypt's tourist industry dropped by 30% in 2011 due to unrest after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak last February.

Tourism minister Munir Fakhri Abdel Nur says revenues fell to $US8.8 billion US last year.

He says the security circumstances have affected tourism.

However, he is confident the situation will improve in the coming year to make up for the losses of 2011.

An election for a new president is scheduled to take place in June. Nominations open on 15 April.
