Consumer spending down in December

Consumer spending has declined for the second successive month, indicating many households remain frugal with their money.

Statistics New Zealand says seasonally-adjusted retail spending using electronic cards declined 0.3% in December, compared with the previous month.

Radio New Zealand's business editor reports that retail spending has eased after a temporary boost provided by the Rugby World Cup in September and October.

While people put more money than ever on their credit and debit cards last month, retail spending fell for a second consecutive month, particularly at bars, restaurants, hotels and petrol stations.

Statistics New Zealand says the trend shows consumer spending is still growing, but the pace is slowing.

Economists say households remain cautious, due to repaying debt, a subdued housing market and modest income growth.
