PM pays tribute to Lloyd Morrison

The Prime Minister has paid tribute to the prominent businessman Lloyd Morrison, who died on Friday after a prolonged battle with cancer.

John Key says he knew Mr Morrison well and the pair were often in contact.

Mr Morrison founded the infrastructure investor Infratil in 1994.

Mr Morrison, 54, died in Seattle, Washington State, where he had been receiving treatment for acute myeloid leukemia.

Mr Morrison was a strong promoter of New Zealand business and the arts.

He was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2009.

Infratil chairman David Newman says Mr Morrison's leadership, vision, charisma, and energy was the driving force in creating what Infratil is today.

Mr Morrison was born in Palmerston North and educated at Wanganui Collegiate and Canterbury University.

He is survived by his wife Julie Nevett, and five children.

Prime Minister John Key says he was totally passionate about New Zealand and led the campaign to change the flag.

Mr Key says his condolences go out to Mr Morrison's family, friends and colleagues at Infratil.

Phoenix tribute

In 1988, Mr Morrison set up the HRL Morrison Trust to support New Zealand musicians and composers.

He was also behind the Welnix consortium that saved the Wellington Phoenix football club.

A moment's silence will be held before Sunday's game at Westpac Stadium against Brisbane Roar. Players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect.
