The number of houses sold in January rose 25% compared with the same month in 2011, while prices were steady.

Figures from the Real Estate Institute show 4,073 unconditional sales for the month with the national median house price at $355,000.

Only Southland recorded a decline in sales volume, with all other regions except Taranaki recording double-digit growth.

The institute says there is still shortage of listings in some regions, including Auckland.
