Port of Tauranga's half year profit has jumped 22% as container numbers grow.

The port made $34.6 million in the six months to December.

Container volumes rose more than 17% while the port handled almost 10% more cargo.

Chief executive Mark Cairns says the company has been working with its large customers to grow their business with the port.

He says the industrial dispute at Ports of Auckland is also helping.
