The chairperson of the Earthquake Commission has hit back at accusations the commission employed people to work in Christchurch because of their family connections.

Michael Wintringham appeared before Parliament's finance and expenditure select committee on Wednesday.

Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove asked Mr Wintringham what guarantee he could give that people had not been appointed on a mate's basis.

Mr Wintringham said the comments were just wrong, and in the case of the nine people with family connections to the commission that were hired, proper employment processes were followed.
